Massey Theatre Presents Oktopus
For A Fun Uplifting Night of Music and Entertainment
Vancouver, BC. Juno nominated Klezmer group Oktopus bring their unique sound and high energy performance to Massey Theatre on Saturday, October 21. Primarily devoted to Klezmer, the musical heritage of Eastern European Jews— you can’t help but tap your foot to the whirlwind of rhythm and melodies that will weave through the aisles creating a provocative, and ecstatically danceable fun night of entertainment.
Oktopus is a major presence on the Canadian world music scene, with over 250 performances to its credit at home and abroad. The eight virtuoso musicians incorporate various components of classical, Quebecois, and jazz repertoires. Its members’ shared passion, and hard work are what makes each of their performances so memorable—whether on stage, in the street, on a ship, in a hot air balloon or in your living room, Oktopus is simply… spectentacular!.
Oktopus’ distinctive music is undeniably rooted in the klezmer tradition, reflecting the rich history of a thousand-year-old community, its persecutions and celebrations, tears and laughter, or both at the same time. Musicians of yesteryear incorporated in their repertoire the music they encountered on their journeys, and just like them, the members of Oktopus are inspired by the music they hear throughout their own travels.
The Oktopus octet was formed in 2010 at the initiative of clarinetist Gabriel Paquin-Buki, creator of musical arrangements and several original compositions After releasing its debut album Lever l’encre in 2014, Oktopus released Hapax in 2017, which earned nominations as Instrumental Album of the Year at the Juno Awards, and World Music Group of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Outstanding performances include the Montreal International Jazz Festival, the Nuit blanche de Montréal en Lumière, Festival d’été de Québec, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, the Ashkenaz Festival in Toronto, the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival, the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, and the International kulturbörse Freiburg (Germany), to name a few.
