“Performing organic jazz in the classic trio or quartet setting, this unit strives to embody the jazz improvising spirit of the 60’s – communication. Playing selections of standards linked together in one organic mish-mash of sonic goodness, this unit brings classic jazz themes and powerful Brownman compositions into the new millenium”

Trinidadian-born multi-award winning jazz trumpeter BROWNMAN ALI brings his straight-ahead hard-swinging acoustic quartet to 2ND FLOOR GASTOWN for a night of 50s & 60s jazz ala Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Duke Ellington and the great American jazz songbook. The group features 8x Global Music Award winner NICK MACLEAN on piano; and two of Canada’s most in demand rhythm section players – bassist BENNETT YOUNG, and drummer TODD STEWART. Bandleader Brownman Ali has won 2 National Jazz Awards, a SOCAN award for composition, 4 Toronto Independent Music Awards, Montreal Jazz Fest’s “Grand Prix du Jazz” award, an International Independent Music Award, is heralded as “Canada’s preeminent jazz trumpet player” by the New York Village Voice and was named “one of the top 10 reasons to visit Toronto” by Air Canada. Jazz audiences will not want to miss this performance!
“Awards are nice, naturally, but to dig what Brownman is doing, you’ve got to see him live. I had a chance to do just that over the summer when Brownman fronted a killer trio … I came away with a blown mind. This guy’s got chops galore, soul to match, and a sense of phrasing that recalls many of the greats, but suggests itself to be his own.”
– Buffalo News
“… a truly gifted improviser with an original creative voice…”
– Gary Bartz, saxophonist with Miles Davis
“… uniquely creative and fearless – like a young Miles Davis”
– Guru, legendary hip-hop icon from Gangstarr/Jazzmatazz fame
“… virtuostic, energized and in the spirit of Miles Davis”
– Toronto’s NOW Magazine
“Canada’s preeminent jazz trumpet player”
– New York Village Voice
“One of the next great voices in the new generation of jazz improvisers”
– Randy Brecker, multi-grammy winning legendary trumpeter
