ABOUT THE HATCH BOOK CLUB

Welcome to the first iteration of the hatch book club – a monthly rotating book club hosted by the hatch winery. Each month a member of the hatch staff (aka hatchling) will select a book & wine pairing to feature in the coming month. Those who wish to participate can purchase the book & wine pairing, and enjoy at their leisure. Anyone can attend the monthly book club gathering at the hatch to discuss the book, enjoy wine by the glass, purchase the next wine & book pairing if they desire, and to mingle with other book lovers.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The Illustrated Man is a 1951 collection of 18 science fiction short stories by American writer Ray Bradbury. A recurring theme throughout the stories is the conflict of the cold mechanics of technology and the psychology of people. It was nominated for the International Fantasy Award in 1952. The unrelated stories are tied together by the frame story of “The Illustrated Man”, a vagrant former member of a carnival freak show with an extensively tattooed body whom the unnamed narrator meets. The man’s tattoos, allegedly created by a time-traveling woman, are individually animated, and each tells a different tale.

ABOUT THE WINE

A vibrant Gamay bursting with ripe cherries and rhubarb, softened by vanilla and toast. Delicate yet complex, with lively acidity and lingering tannins. This mouth-filling yet balanced wine would convert any naysayer.

ABOUT THE PAIRING

This pairing really felt like a no-brainer to kick-off the hatch book club. The main character is a wandering mis-understood hobo, what better wine pairing could there be than our ‘Hobo Series’ Gamay?

I discovered this book on the final day of my honeymoon. My wife and I were in London, England determined to make the most of our final day of what had been a fantastic trip. The sun was shining on a beautiful spring day, so we decided we would stroll along the canals of North London, through Camden Market and the London Zoo, to our final destination – “Word on The Water” a bookstore built on a floating canal boat. Upon arrival the store was packed with people, so after a quick look around I retreated to the sunny walkway as my wife browsed through the books. The hustle and bustle of Kings Cross was more than enough to keep me entertained, and I ended up laughing audibly at a group of teenagers passing by. A man whom I can only assume was the proprietor of Word on the Water laughed as well, and we turned to share a smile. He had long white hair, a dark green velvet suit, and a wooden walking stick. He looked like a cross between a Charles Dickens character and a member of The Beatles entourage during their hippie acid phase. He looked me up and down, noticing the tattoos on my arms and legs, and asked “have you read Ray Bradbury – The Illustrated Man?” I told him I hadn’t and inquired what the book was about. He said it was a series of short-stories about a man covered in tattoos, but at night his tattoos come alive and tell their stories. He added that he should have a copy inside, glancing toward the boat/bookstore. I thanked him and disappeared inside to find a copy. After some searching I managed to find the last remaining copy. I paid for the book, and went looking for the old man to thank him, but I couldn’t find him anywhere. He had disappeared into the crowds of people, and I was left wondering if he was real or a figment of my imagination.

I hope you enjoy this wine & book as much as I did, although to be fair I am a bit biased.
